Above the Rhône

Birgisch

Welcome to Birgisch

The elongated terrace above the right bank of the Rhone River

Once Birgisch consisted of two communities: Unterbirgisch and Oberbirgisch. The former was already mentioned in 1320 and belonged to the Gumperschaft Naters, while Oberbirgisch made up one eighth of the Gumperschaft Mund. Both communities shared common forests and alps, so that the administration often interlocked. Until the 1950s, Birgisch could only be reached by a mule track via Naters. From 1955 to 1973 there was a cableway connection. Today, the village is accessible by a road connection from Brig that is open all year round.
