The snowshoe trail starts at the Aletschbord. Here you can already enjoy a unique view of the Great Aletsch Glacier. The ascent leads past the Villa Tyndall (built in 1877) and up to the Tyndall monument (2351 metres above sea level), which is dedicated to the Irish scientist John Tyndall.
The inscription reads:
"Raised to her all beloved by Luisa his wife to mark a place of memories."
The deep affection for her husband, the feelings of guilt over his tragic end and the attachment to the Belalp and its inhabitants were probably the motives for the stone memorial. John Tyndall (1820-1893) was an Irish physicist and mountaineer. From 1861 until his death, he spent his summers in the Swiss Alps, mainly at his favourite place, the Belalp.
